A voice for living well with Type 1 Diabetes

Came home from work on Friday not feeling well. Went out to dinner with Kendra, Connor and the Groovers.  I wasn’t hungry, split a reuben with Connor and barely ate my half.  Came home and didn’t feel right. Blood sugar was 255 – and I don’t do 255!  Bolused to get it down and went to bed.

Woke up on Saturday with an elevated blood sugar and no appetite. Had an 11am tee time to play golf with Connor and his cousin, Alec (all three of us are type 1).  My head was throbbing and stomach unsettled, so I showered to see if it would make me feel better.  It did, so I decided to play golf. Made it through 11 holes as my body was aching and my head started to pound – but my blood sugars were in range throughout.

Afterward, I showered again and took a nap.  Blood sugars started to climb.  Had no appetite and went to bed early.  Woke up on Sunday @ 225.  It climbed north of that to 265.  Bolused to get it down. Blood sugar stayed in the 220s, so I boluses again.  Finally, around 11am the blood sugar moved south of 200.

Whew … it’s been awhile since I’ve had to manage being sick (this was either food poisoning or a 48 hour bug).  What did I do well?  Stayed in touch with by blood sugars and made corrections.  Rested.

What should I have done different? I definitely should not have played golf.  And I could have set a temp basal … for some reason I have a have a hard time remembering that gift a pump provides.

Started to feel better noon on Sunday as I am writing this.  Happy Independence Day for those of you in the U.S.A … be safe and enjoy!
